1.Winter Poem [3:45 ] (Råberg)

I drew inspiration for this piece from the single-note contrapuntal lines in Bach’s Cello Suites that I sometimes practice. This piece is in that spirit and was composed on the acoustic bass.

2.Forest Star [4:00] (Råberg)

Originally recorded on my “Orbis” release. It was composed on the bass and serves as a tribute to Värmland, the region in Sweden where I grew up. The Forest Star flower is significant to this region.

Improvised Suite I

The following six tracks are improvised pieces or “real time compositions” as I call them. Niyati is a term from Sanskrit that has many meanings whereof one is about things unfolding in a natural way. I used that approach in these improvisations.

3.Niyati [2:32]

4.Jack’s Hollow [2:08]

(dedicated to drum legend Jack DeJohnette)

5.Banjul Tapestry [2:09]

6.Lookout Lake [2:41]

7.Modus in E [3:26]

8.Crazy Bird [1:20]

9.Circulus [5:00] (Råberg)

This composition has a circular structure, naturally leading to repetition, its ending had to be imposed rather organically resolved.

10. JuJu [4:34] (Wayne Shorter)

Jazz legend Wayne Shorter is one of my biggest influences. I had fun arranging this piece for the bass.

Improvised Suite II

11. Vi Två [2:31] 12. Mayfly [1:26] 13.Mysore Bounce [2:12]

14.North Star [1:56] (Råberg)

I associated the recurring A harmonic in this piece with the North Star and that it is constant and “leading star”.

15.Like Someone in Love [4:16] (J. Van Heusen)

I liked arranging Van Husen’s beautiful standard for the acoustic bass. Arranging and composing for the acoustic bass is something find interesting because of the the limitations of the instrument. It engages me in a certain creativity and problemsolving.
